Self Portraits!

The Kindergarten artists created self-portraits! After learning that a self-portrait is a picture of yourself, we looked at popular examples, like those of Frida Kahlo, Chuck Close and Vincent Van Gogh. We learned that everyone is special no matter what they look like and what really count is what is inside! We read and talked about the poem Colors by Shell Silverstein.

"My skin is kind of sort of brownish pinkish yellowish white.

My eyes are greyish blueish green, but I'm told they look orange in the night.

My hair is reddish blondish brown, but its silver when its wet,

and all the colors I am inside have not been invented yet."

- Shel Silverstein

First we created a background from our imagination using magic crayons. Magic crayons turn into paint when water is applied. Then we painted our skin color, t-shirts and made a hair collage out of construction paper. To finish the portraits we added features like eyes, nose, mouth, teeth, eyebrows, lips and ears.

The Kindergarten artists enjoyed the opportunity to look at themselves in their mirrors, learning to recognize shapes on their faces and use a wide variety of art mediums to create a unique portrait of themselves!
