African Painted Houses

This art project was based on "My Painted House, My Friendly Chicken and Me" by Maya Angelou  This story is about Thandi, a South African Ndebele girl, her beloved chicken, and the beautiful mural art produced by the women of her tribe. Ndebele women paint their houses with bright and bold colors in original geometric patterns. This unique book taught us about the traditions of artists that are passed down from parents to children, introduced us to a new culture, and helped us learn how artists use shapes!

We began by reading this story and looking closely at the wonderful photographs of the painted houses. Then we learned about shapes and how to create them on our very own house. After drawing designs out of the shapes, lines and patterns we carefully colored our houses with "magic crayons" (water color crayons.)

Finally we added a roof and cut out a door.
